HMA Winter Raptor Survey Award

The HMA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the Winter Raptor Research Award of up to $2,000 annually to support studies relating to winter raptor research. This grant supports the study of raptor winter movements, distribution, ecology and behavior as well as the relationships between breeding, migration, and wintering populations. Proposals on the following monitoring topics are encouraged:

Winter monitoring efforts, possibly including GPS, satellite telemetry or radar tracking
Investigations to guide standardizing and developing winter road raptor surveys
Use of Christmas Bird Count data, HMA’s Winter Raptor Survey data, band recovery data, or other related databases to address patterns of winter distribution and abundance
Research aimed at understanding the connectivity between breeding, migrating, and non-breeding distributions of raptor species

To apply, submit a proposal no longer than three pages that includes:

Background of the applicant(s) and organizations involved
Significance of the proposed research
Location of the study site(s) and the particular raptor species involved
Specific research objectives and methods
Proposed budget (1 page or less), including other sources of funding or in-kind support

Proposals will be accepted from August 1 to November 1, 2026. Proposals will be reviewed by HMA’s Winter Raptor Survey Committee and will be announced by December 1, 2026. All grant recipients are required to submit a short paper describing the research project and results to the HMA journal Hawk Migration Studies within six months of the conclusion of the study.
